Szumy nad Tanwia With a Dog - Why It Is Allowed Here and Not in the National Park

Szumy nad Tanwia is one of those places that looks unreal online and turns out better in person: the river drops over low rock ledges, creating dozens of cascades in a pine forest. The question that keeps coming up in search is whether you can bring a dog. The answer is shorter than most people expect.

Yes, and it is not obvious

You can, with the dog on a leash. The surprise comes from the fact that the Roztocze region is associated with a national park, and that park bans dogs entirely apart from assistance dogs.

Except Szumy nad Tanwia is not inside Roztocze National Park. The Nad Tanwia reserve sits in the Solska Forest Landscape Park, in the Susiec municipality. That is a different form of nature protection, with a different regime and no park-wide dog ban. So you can come to Roztocze with a dog, see the region's most recognisable sight, and break no rule doing it.

What to expect

The reserve protects the valleys of the Tanew and Jelen rivers together with the rock ledges that form the cascades. The trail along the cascades is easy and largely laid on wooden boardwalks and platforms, which cuts both ways for a dog:

• Upside: even surface, no mud, an obvious route and less temptation to wander off it.
• Downside: planks after rain or morning dew can be slippery, and it gets narrow when busy.

If your dog is unsure on smooth surfaces or has long claws, give it time over the first stretch. There is no point forcing the pace on a boardwalk you cannot step off.

Leash, for two separate reasons

The reserve requires you to stay on the marked route, and quite apart from that, Polish law requires dogs to be leashed in forests. The two overlap here, so the leash is not a courtesy to other visitors, it is the rule.

In practice a short lead beats a retractable one. On boardwalks and at passing points the advantage is immediate.

In spring the cascades carry the most water and look their most dramatic. In autumn there is less of it, but the forest is at its best and the chance of meeting a crowd drops to almost nothing.

What not to do

• Do not leave the trail for the riverbed. That is precisely the feature the reserve exists to protect.
• Do not count on a swim here. If you want your dog in the water, plan it outside the reserve boundary; the area around Susiec has no shortage of options.
• Do not leave anything behind. There are no bins every hundred metres in a reserve, so bring spare bags and carry it all out.

Before you set off

Access rules for individual sections do get adjusted, and boardwalks are sometimes closed after storms or for repairs. The information boards at the trailhead outrank any online guide, this one included.
