Science is still refining the full picture here - but the fact that dogs use this muscle more often, more intensely and more purposefully than their wild relatives remains well supported.

A habit that reinforces itself

The existence of the LAOM muscle is one part of the story - the other is how training and experience reinforce its use. If a sad-eyed look has ever worked for a dog - earning attention, food, or a softened telling-off - the dog learns that the behaviour pays off, the same way they learn any other command.
